Iran declares July 6 public holiday for Khamenei funeral

TEHRAN (Dunya News) – The Iranian government has announced that July 6 will be observed as a nationwide public holiday as the country prepares for the final funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the decision was made to allow thousands of mourners attending the funeral ceremonies in Tehran to return to their hometowns more conveniently following the official events.

She also confirmed that Iran will observe a nationwide day of mourning on Thursday, while Khamenei’s burial is scheduled to take place in the holy city of Mashhad on July 8.

According to the official programme, funeral prayers, memorial gatherings and burial ceremonies will be held from July 4 through July 8 across the cities of Tehran, Qom and Mashhad. In addition, condolence ceremonies are expected to be organized in several Iraqi cities, including Baghdad, Kazmain, Karbala and Najaf, reflecting the regional significance of the occasion.

Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former Supreme Leader, was killed during the initial US attack on Iran on February 28, according to Iranian authorities.
