PM Shehbaz inaugurates Pakistan’s largest Sky47 data centre

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir have inaugurated Sky47 Karakoram One, Pakistan’s largest data centre, describing it as a major milestone in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and technological future.

During the inauguration ceremony on Friday, the prime minister and the field marshal were briefed on the facility, which officials said would provide advanced cloud computing, data hosting and digital services for public and private sector needs.

According to the briefing, the state-of-the-art data centre has been designed to support artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and high-performance computing, while also enhancing the protection of sensitive national and commercial data.

Officials said the project represents a significant step towards technological self-reliance and will help expand Pakistan’s digital capabilities in emerging technologies.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described Sky47 Karakoram One as a landmark achievement and praised everyone involved in completing the project in a short period.

He said the facility would strengthen Pakistan’s digital security and demonstrate what the country could achieve through determination, expertise and institutional collaboration. The prime minister also acknowledged the leadership of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and project partner ZTE for their contributions to the initiative.

Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the inauguration marked the beginning of a new era for artificial intelligence in Pakistan.

She said the new facility would unlock fresh economic opportunities by enabling the country to make better use of its data resources and skilled workforce, adding that data-driven insights would become one of the most valuable sources of economic growth in the future.
