Nawaz Sharif promises airport, motorway and modern hospitals for AJK

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has announced an ambitious development agenda for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), promising major infrastructure projects, modern healthcare facilities and an international airport in Mirpur if his party forms the next government in the region.
Addressing a large election rally in Mirpur on Friday, Nawaz Sharif said several key development projects launched during his previous tenure remained incomplete after his government left office. He pledged to revive and complete those initiatives to accelerate economic growth and improve the quality of life across AJK.

Calling himself a Kashmiri, Nawaz Sharif said Kashmir was not his second home but his first. He recalled launching the Triple M Motorway project during his previous government and said its completion would have significantly improved connectivity and economic activity in the region. He also promised to complete the motorway, extend the Murree Expressway to Muzaffarabad and personally oversee development projects alongside a future PML-N government.
Presenting the party’s election commitments, the former prime minister announced plans to establish new schools, colleges and universities across AJK. He also pledged to provide free medicines in government hospitals on the Punjab model and build state-of-the-art cancer, cardiac and children’s hospitals equipped with modern medical facilities.
Nawaz Sharif further promised to establish an international airport in Mirpur, improve access to clean drinking water and expand essential civic infrastructure throughout Azad Kashmir. He added that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had already gifted Mirpur a fleet of modern air-conditioned public buses as a demonstration of the party’s commitment to the region.
Speaking about the political environment, Nawaz Sharif called for healthy democratic competition and urged political parties to avoid turning differences into personal hostility. Referring to PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, he said political disagreements should not create bitterness, adding that Bilawal was like a brother despite their differing political views.
The rally was also addressed by PML-N candidates Chaudhry Muhammad Saeed, Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, Azhar Sadiq, Fateh Mehmood-ul-Hassan, Chaudhry Rukhsar and Yasir Mansha, along with federal ministers, who appealed to voters to support the party in the upcoming AJK elections.
