At least 20 people have lost their lives after devastating flash floods swept through northeastern Afghanistan, while around 100 others remain missing, according to the Taliban-led government.

The worst-affected area is Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, where powerful floodwaters caused widespread destruction, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said. More than 80 people were also injured in the disaster.

Authorities warned that the death toll is expected to increase as rescue teams continue searching for those still unaccounted for in the mountainous province along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

Taliban officials said search and rescue operations were launched immediately following the disaster, with emergency teams working in difficult terrain to reach affected communities. The NDMA cautioned that the floods could result in significant human and economic losses.
Afghanistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with increasingly frequent extreme weather events. While some regions continue to suffer prolonged drought, others are experiencing heavier rainfall that has intensified the risk of flash flooding.
