AJK General Elections To Be Held On July 27, Election Schedule Announced

  • Polling for AJK Legislative Assembly elections will take place on July 27.

  • AJK Assembly has also passed a resolution retaining 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees.

The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has announced that general elections for the AJK Legislative Assembly will be held on July 27, 2026, and released a detailed election schedule for the electoral process.

According to the official notification, polling across all constituencies of the AJK Legislative Assembly will be conducted on July 27 from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Under the announced schedule, candidates will be able to submit their nomination papers to returning officers between June 9 and June 19. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be carried out on June 20, while the preliminary list of candidates whose papers are accepted will also be published on the same day.

Candidates wishing to challenge the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers may file appeals with the Election Commission from June 21 to June 24. Hearings on these appeals will take place on June 26 and June 27, while decisions will be announced between June 28 and June 29.

The Election Commission has set June 30 as the final date for the withdrawal of nomination papers. The list of contesting candidates will be published on July 1, while election symbols will be allotted on July 2.

The final list of candidates, along with their allocated election symbols, will also be issued on July 2. The Election Commission said the notification has come into force immediately and that all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections will be completed according to the announced timetable.

Meanwhile, the AJK Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution to retain 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees. The resolution described refugee representation as a historical and constitutional reality that should continue within the existing framework.

The assembly stated that any reforms required to address electoral complications and make the system more acceptable to political parties could be introduced through the Legislative Assembly. It emphasized that constitutional reforms fall within the authority of elected representatives and should be handled through the democratic process.

The resolution also called for broader consultations involving political parties, bar associations, the bar council, civil society organizations and constitutional experts before any changes are considered.
