US Vice President JD Vance has praised Pakistan’s leadership for its role in facilitating diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, saying Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir played an important part in advancing the dialogue.

Speaking during a high-level meeting focused on regional stability and future US-Iran relations, Vance said Pakistan’s leadership and “careful and skilled negotiations” helped bring the discussions to the current stage.

Vance specifically commended Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing him as a statesman and an effective diplomat despite his military background.

“I’ve probably talked to Field Marshal Munir more than I’ve talked to anybody else over the last three months,” Vance said, adding that the talks would not have reached this point without his support and statesmanship.

In a light-hearted remark, the US vice president said he has “two very important people” in his life: his wife, Usha Vance, who is of Indian heritage, and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

According to Vance, the broader objective of the negotiations is to reshape relations between the United States and Iran through diplomacy and cooperation rather than confrontation.

He said the US administration envisions a future in which Iran and Gulf nations can work together to promote peace and prosperity across the region.

Vance stated that Washington is prepared to pursue a fundamental transformation in its relationship with Tehran if Iran’s leadership commits to ending activities that contribute to regional instability and permanently abandons any pursuit of nuclear weapons.

He added that improved regional cooperation could help ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy supplies, strengthen global energy security and support economic growth.

Describing the meeting as an important diplomatic milestone, Vance said significant progress had already been made and expressed hope that further breakthroughs could be achieved in the coming rounds of discussions.
