Saudi Arabia Finalizes Preparations for Annual Kaaba Kiswa Replacement

MAKKAH: Saudi authorities have entered the final stage of preparations for the annual replacement of the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswa, the black silk covering that is renewed each year with the arrival of the new Hijri year.
The replacement ceremony is regarded as one of the most important traditions linked to the Grand Mosque in Makkah and marks the completion of months of work carried out at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba’s Covering.

The production process begins with natural silk, which undergoes preparation, dyeing and weaving before being adorned with Qur’anic verses embroidered using gold- and silver-plated threads. The various sections are then assembled and prepared for installation around the Holy Kaaba.
As the scheduled replacement date approaches, teams of Saudi technicians and specialists supervise the transportation and fitting of the new Kiswa.
