PTA Introduces VPN Registration Process for Legitimate Users
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Wednesday a new, streamlined process for the registration of virtual private networks (VPNs) intended for legitimate users. The move comes as PTA begins blocking unregistered VPNs to bolster internet security and protect user safety across Pakistan.
The PTA’s decision to regulate VPNs is driven by concerns over unregistered VPNs, which officials warn could pose significant security risks, including unauthorized access to sensitive data and potential access to illegal content. VPNs are widely used globally to bypass restricted content, and in Pakistan, they have been employed by citizens to access platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), which remains banned in the country.

Today’s announcement followed a consultation session on VPN registration attended by representatives from the Ministry of IT & Telecommunication (MoIT&T), Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), and the Pakistan IT Association (P@SHA). The discussion focused on creating a secure digital environment to support Pakistan’s IT and e-commerce sectors.
Through an online portal at ipregistration.pta.gov.pk, the PTA’s new framework enables IT companies, freelancers, and other stakeholders to register their VPNs, allowing for uninterrupted operations in Pakistan’s expanding digital economy. The platform simplifies the process, ensuring that legitimate VPN users can maintain access without disruption.
The PTA emphasized that the registration framework would deter illegal activities by encouraging companies and freelancers to comply with the new rules, safeguarding national security while supporting a safe, accessible digital space.
“This consultation process underscores PTA’s commitment to fostering a secure and compliant digital landscape, empowering Pakistan’s IT sector while upholding national security,” the PTA statement concluded.
