Nepra Approves Rs1.99 Per Unit Electricity Tariff Cut Alongside Rs1.19 Fuel Adjustment Increase

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a reduction of Rs1.99 per unit in electricity tariffs under the quarterly adjustment mechanism, offering significant relief to consumers across Pakistan for the next three months.
According to the regulator’s decision, the tariff reduction relates to the quarterly adjustment for the January–March 2026 period. Nepra has forwarded the decision to the federal government for formal notification and implementation.

Once notified, the reduction will remain effective from June to August 2026 and is expected to provide cumulative relief of approximately Rs67.17 billion to eligible electricity consumers nationwide.
The quarterly adjustment mechanism is used to account for changes in power sector costs and revenues, allowing consumers to benefit from lower-than-projected expenses or absorb additional costs when necessary.
However, the relief comes alongside a separate increase in electricity tariffs approved by Nepra under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.
The regulator has approved a Rs1.19 per unit increase for April 2026 fuel cost variations. According to an official notification, the additional charge will apply to electricity consumers across the country, including those served by Karachi’s power utility, and will be reflected in electricity bills issued in June 2026.
Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested a higher increase of Rs1.73 per unit under the April fuel cost adjustment. After reviewing the proposal, Nepra approved a lower increase of Rs1.19 per unit.
Officials explained that monthly fuel cost adjustments are designed to reflect fluctuations in international fuel prices and electricity generation costs, while quarterly adjustments account for broader financial changes in the power sector.
With the Rs1.99 per unit quarterly reduction outweighing the Rs1.19 per unit monthly increase, consumers are expected to receive overall relief in their electricity bills once the federal government formally notifies the quarterly adjustment decision.
