Internet disruptions leave citizens frustrated across Pakistan

Significant internet disruptions have been reported across Pakistan, affecting major cities such as Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar. Despite the challenges, the IT Ministry has stated that all digital platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, remain accessible to the public, emphasizing freedom of expression.

In Karachi, residents in areas like North Nazimabad, Gulshan, and Karsaz have reported severely slowed internet speeds. Similar issues are prevalent in Balochistan, particularly in Quetta, where users are calling for the full restoration of services. In Peshawar, residents are struggling to upload and download voice notes, images, and videos, compounding difficulties for those relying on online work.

Wi-Fi services in several areas have also been disrupted, adding to the frustration of users who depend on stable connections for daily activities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), however, has clarified that there will be no ban on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), addressing rumors about potential restrictions.

According to the PTA, the government lacks legal authority under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 to impose such a ban. Reports suggest that the Ministry of Law confirmed this position, ensuring that VPNs remain accessible for now.

IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja acknowledged that Pakistan faces daily cyberattacks, and the Ministry of Interior may instruct the PTA to take specific measures in cases involving national security. Despite these threats, Khawaja reiterated that digital platforms remain open and accessible for the public.

The disruptions have caused widespread inconvenience, particularly for those working online, with users in affected cities urging authorities to take swift action to restore normal internet services.
