ECP seeks explanation over Imran Khan’s non-appearance in contempt case

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday sought an explanation from Adiala Jail authorities for their failure to produce the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder in the contempt of Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner case.

The hearing was conducted by a three-member bench led by Sindh ECP member Nisar Durrani. Despite earlier directives, the PTI founder did not appear via video link as expected.

During the proceedings, PTI chief’s lawyer, Faisal Chaudhry, reminded the commission that the court had previously directed the arrangement of a video link appearance. When questioned, ECP officials confirmed that their video link setup was ready. However, the jail authorities failed to activate the link, citing possible technical difficulties caused by jammers or other issues.

Faisal Chaudhry urged the ECP to consider summoning the PTI chief in person if video link issues persisted. He also argued that the jail authorities’ inaction amounted to contempt and called for the case to be dismissed entirely.

The ECP’s counsel, however, defended the situation, suggesting that the technical glitches were likely unforeseen issues and not deliberate neglect. He also pointed out that the absence of the accused prevented any evidence from being recorded during the session.

In response to the lawyer’s request, Member Nisar Durrani clarified that the case could not be dismissed during the ongoing hearing.

The commission has now directed the Adiala Jail authorities to provide a detailed response regarding the failure to ensure the PTI founder’s appearance. The hearing has been postponed until January 15.
