Tamim Iqbal Elected Bangladesh Youngest Cricket Board President

  • Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
  • At 37, he becomes the youngest person to lead the country’s cricket board.
  • Tamim has pledged to restore the reputation of Bangladesh cricket following recent controversies.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), becoming the youngest person to hold the position in the country’s cricket history.

Tamim’s election comes weeks after he was appointed interim president following major changes in Bangladesh cricket administration. The 37-year-old secured a commanding victory in the board elections, receiving 73 votes from 75 councillors.

The former opener topped a field of 16 candidates contesting for 12 director positions. Following the election, Fahim Sinha, who received 66 votes, was chosen as vice-president during the board’s first meeting.

Speaking to reporters after assuming office, Tamim acknowledged the challenges facing Bangladesh cricket and called for collective efforts to rebuild the sport’s image.

“We all have to keep one thing in mind, which is that the reputation damage that Bangladesh cricket has suffered worldwide, I alone cannot fix this,” Tamim said. He added that the support of all stakeholders would be necessary to move the game forward.

Cricket in Bangladesh has faced significant challenges in recent years, particularly following the political turmoil that followed the 2024 uprising which led to the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. After a new government took office in February, the previous Bangladesh Cricket Board was dissolved over allegations of gross irregularities, paving the way for an interim administration headed by Tamim.

The country’s cricket administration also faced international scrutiny earlier this year after Bangladesh refused to participate in the T20 World Cup in India, citing security concerns. The International Cricket Council later rejected Bangladesh’s request to play its matches in Sri Lanka and subsequently excluded the team from the tournament.

Tamim retired from international cricket in 2023 after an illustrious 15-year career. He scored more than 15,000 international runs for Bangladesh and remains the only Bangladeshi cricketer to have scored centuries in all three formats of international cricket.
