Constitutional Petition Filed Against Maulana Fazlur Rehman Over Remarks on Pakistan Army

  • Constitutional petition filed in court against Maulana Fazlur Rehman
  • Petition seeks legal action over his recent remarks about the Pakistan Army
  • His comments had already sparked a strong political backlash
  • Matter has now reached the courts for legal review

A constitutional petition has been filed against Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman over his recent remarks regarding the Pakistan Army, bringing the controversy before the judiciary.

The petitioner has requested the court to take legal action, arguing that Fazlur Rehman’s statements were inappropriate and should be examined under the relevant provisions of the Constitution and the law.

The petition follows Fazlur Rehman’s speech in which he questioned why civilians were being encouraged to confront armed groups, arguing that defending the country is the responsibility of the military. He also said that if the military wanted to participate in politics, it should “take off the uniform and contest elections,” adding that political decisions should be left to the people through their votes.

His remarks triggered widespread political debate, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif strongly rejecting the comments. Asif said it was unfair and disrespectful to link the sacrifices of Pakistan’s soldiers to their salaries, stressing that military personnel lay down their lives out of faith, duty, patriotism, and commitment to the nation—not for financial compensation.

With the constitutional petition now before the court, the issue has moved beyond the political arena into the legal domain. The court is expected to decide whether the petition is maintainable and whether any further legal proceedings will follow.
