Bilawal Bhutto Raises Concerns Over Transparency of AJK Elections

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has expressed concerns over the transparency of the ongoing Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election process, saying that some aspects of the polls have already become controversial.
Addressing party workers in Muzaffarabad, Bilawal said there appeared to be a political situation in Azad Kashmir, adding that issues related to the refugee constituencies had become controversial and, according to him, were not resolved in the manner they should have been.

He said that if the elections were disputed, the legitimacy of any government formed afterward—regardless of whether it belonged to the PPP, PML-N or any other party—could be questioned. He added that a government facing a disputed mandate might find it difficult to effectively address key issues.
Bilawal said he hoped the newly elected AJK Assembly would take important decisions for the region. He also stated that the PPP wanted the people of Azad Kashmir to enjoy the same rights and opportunities as citizens in the rest of Pakistan.
Referring to the party’s election manifesto, he said it focuses on property rights, self-governance, employment opportunities and the proposal for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The PPP chairman also reiterated his party’s longstanding position that the future of Kashmir should be decided by the people of Kashmir. He expressed hope that voters in Mirpur and across Azad Kashmir would support the PPP’s manifesto in the elections.
