The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution calling for the region to be granted the status of an interim constitutional province of Pakistan.

The resolution stated that once Gilgit-Baltistan becomes an interim province, it should receive representation in the National Assembly, Senate, and national financial institutions to ensure equal participation in the country’s political and economic system.

Lawmakers also urged the federal government to grant the region interim provincial status through a constitutional amendment or an Act of Parliament.

According to the resolution, Gilgit-Baltistan should be formally incorporated into Pakistan’s constitutional framework through the required constitutional process.

The resolution further emphasized that granting Gilgit-Baltistan interim constitutional provincial status should not affect Pakistan’s longstanding position on the Kashmir dispute.
