Ex-ISI chief Faiz Hamid investigated over direct political links with PTI and others

Former ISI director general Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hamid is under investigation for maintaining contact with around 50 politicians, most of whom are associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). This scrutiny comes amid allegations of his involvement in political activities, which is prohibited under the Army Act for retired officers with sensitive postings.
Sources revealed that Hamid’s interactions with politicians, including his alleged links to PTI’s jailed chairman Imran Khan, are being thoroughly investigated. While the exact nature of these connections—whether direct or indirect—remains unclear, reports suggest he continued to engage with political figures even after his retirement, despite repeated warnings from military authorities.

His communication with PTI members allegedly persisted during Khan’s imprisonment, facilitated through what insiders have described as a “jail network” and other intermediaries. These links are being examined as part of a broader inquiry into Hamid’s political activities.
Under the Army Act, retired officers with sensitive assignments are barred from engaging in political activities for five years post-retirement. This restriction, extended from two years following a 2023 amendment, explicitly applies to individuals like Hamid. Despite these rules, Hamid’s continued involvement with politicians has raised concerns within the military, ultimately leading to his formal arraignment.
PTI leadership, including Imran Khan, has distanced itself from Hamid’s arrest and activities. Speaking through his legal team, Khan denied any political connection with the former ISI chief. He described the arrest as an internal army matter, unconnected to PTI’s operations.
Senior lawyer Intizar Panjutha, after meeting Khan in Adiala Jail, stated, “Khan emphasized that his party had no association with General Faiz Hamid’s political activities and suggested a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 events.”
The military’s media wing, the ISPR, confirmed that Hamid faces charges of engaging in political activities, misuse of authority, and violations of the Official Secrets Act. His alleged role in inciting unrest, including the violent incidents of May 9, is also under investigation.
The ISPR stated that Hamid’s political engagements and collaboration with vested political interests had potentially destabilized state security. Despite these serious allegations, the military has assured that Hamid is being afforded all legal rights.
Reports suggest that Hamid maintained ties with multiple politicians even after being cautioned by military authorities. His alleged refusal to cease political involvement ultimately led to his arrest and the current investigation.
