‘Rehmat’ faces criticism over viral saree scene

ARY Digital’s drama serial Rehmat has sparked a social media debate after a scene featuring the lead actress in a saree went viral, with many viewers questioning the wardrobe choices shown in a family-oriented television production.
The widely shared clip shows the actress wearing a saree paired with a blouse that some social media users described as overly revealing for mainstream Pakistani television. The scene quickly drew attention online, prompting criticism of the drama’s styling and direction.

Several viewers argued that the outfit appeared out of place within the context of the storyline and did not align with the expectations associated with family entertainment.
The controversy triggered a wave of reactions across social media platforms, with users expressing differing opinions on the evolving portrayal of fashion in local dramas.
One user wrote, “Film aur TV mein koi tou difference hona chahiye” (There should be some difference between films and television).
Another criticized the production team, saying, “The director is responsible for this. The scene could have been handled differently, and the actress could have been asked to adjust the saree.”
A separate comment read, “Bhala ho purple dupaty ka jisny zra si izzat bcha li abhi bhi” (Thank goodness for the purple dupatta that still preserved a bit of modesty).
Some users also questioned the role of the country’s media regulator, with one netizen remarking, “Aur yahan PEMRA bhi andha ho jata hai” (And here, even PEMRA seems to turn a blind eye).
The incident has reignited a broader conversation about changing fashion trends in Pakistani television, the balance between creative expression and cultural expectations, and the standards audiences expect from prime-time drama serials.
