Electricity prices likely to rise as CPPA seeks 82 paisa per unit hike

Electricity consumers in Pakistan may soon face higher power bills after the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested a tariff increase under the monthly fuel cost adjustment mechanism.
The CPPA has asked the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to approve an increase of 82 paisa per unit for electricity consumed during May. The regulator is scheduled to hold a public hearing before announcing its decision.

According to the CPPA’s petition, a total of 12.638 billion units of electricity were generated during May. The average fuel cost stood at Rs9.25 per unit, compared with the reference fuel cost of Rs8.43 per unit.
The electricity generation mix for the month comprised 33.27% hydropower, 13.54% imported coal, 11.66% local coal, 8.31% local gas, and 0.16% furnace oil.
NEPRA will examine the figures submitted by the CPPA before announcing its final verdict on the proposed tariff adjustment.
