Pakistan enjoyed the better of the opening day in the first Test against the West Indies, with the visitors’ fast bowlers making early inroads before persistent rain repeatedly interrupted play at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad.
The match was a historic one for Caribbean cricket, as the Brian Lara Cricket Academy hosted its first-ever men’s Test match, becoming the 13th venue in the region to stage a Test.

West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch offering assistance to the seam bowlers. Brandon King returned to the Test side to open the innings alongside Tagenarine Chanderpaul, while Amir Jangoo featured in the middle order after recently scoring a double century.
Pakistan, led by Babar Azam in his second tenure as Test captain, started confidently with the ball. Before the match began, left-arm spinner Ali Usman received his maiden Test cap from Salman Ali Agha, marking a memorable moment in his career.
Veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas set the tone with an outstanding opening spell, consistently troubling the West Indies batters with seam movement and disciplined line and length. After several close calls, Abbas earned the breakthrough when Brandon King chopped the ball onto his stumps after scoring 12 runs.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul then attempted to steady the innings with a patient knock before Aamer Jamal provided Pakistan with another breakthrough, dismissing the left-hander for 21. Kavem Hodge and Shai Hope responded with a cautious partnership to prevent any further damage before another rain interruption.
The opening day was heavily affected by the weather, with multiple stoppages, including an early lunch, limiting the amount of cricket that could be played.
At the final stoppage of the day, West Indies were 60-2 after 25.5 overs. Kavem Hodge remained unbeaten on 28, while Shai Hope was at the crease as the hosts looked to rebuild their innings.
Day 1 belonged to Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack, with Mohammad Abbas and Aamer Jamal claiming one wicket each while keeping the West Indies scoring under control.
