PMD issues nationwide monsoon alert as heavy rains, urban flooding and landslide risks increase

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert, forecasting a fresh spell of monsoon rains that is expected to affect most parts of the country during the first week of July. Authorities have warned of heavy rainfall, urban flooding, flash floods and landslides in several vulnerable areas.
According to the Met Office, widespread rain accompanied by wind and thunderstorms is expected in Azad Jammu and Kashmir from July 1 to 6, with Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Bagh and Haveli among the areas likely to be affected. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also expected to receive rainfall from July 1 to 5.

The forecast also includes Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal and Jhelum, while Sahiwal, Jhang, Multan and Khanewal are likely to experience rain between July 3 and 6.
The PMD said Gilgit-Baltistan is expected to receive monsoon showers from July 1 to 5, while various districts of Sindh and Balochistan are also likely to witness rainfall during the upcoming spell.
The department cautioned that intense downpours and lightning could cause damage to weak and vulnerable structures. It also warned of an increased risk of landslides in the mountainous regions of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Azad Kashmir.
In addition, flash flooding may develop in streams, nullahs and local waterways across hilly areas, while heavy rainfall could lead to urban flooding in low-lying parts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad.
The Met Office has advised tourists, commuters and residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, follow official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
