JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has thrown a major political challenge to the government after agreeing in principle to the formation of a joint opposition in Parliament, saying opposition parties must now coordinate their strategy and play a more effective role.

Speaking to the media following an important political meeting, Fazlur Rehman said the participating parties had agreed that opposition forces should work together inside Parliament rather than pursue separate strategies.

“We have agreed in principle that there should be a joint opposition inside Parliament so that we have a common strategy for parliamentary business and our actions are coordinated through mutual consultation,” he said.

Fazlur Rehman said the purpose of the proposed arrangement was to strengthen the opposition’s parliamentary role through coordinated decisions and consultation.

Questioning the opposition’s continued silence, he asked how long political parties could remain quiet and continue to be restricted by political considerations.

“How long can we remain silent? How long will we continue to be constrained by compromises?” he questioned.

The JUI-F chief also strongly questioned ongoing discussions about the creation of new provinces, asking what basis existed for raising the issue at the present time.

According to Fazlur Rehman, there was currently neither adequate preparation for creating new provinces nor an appropriate environment for such a move.

He said the opposition had therefore decided to take its own narrative directly to the people and explain its position on important national and political issues.

Fazlur Rehman also responded to the prime minister’s invitation to opposition parties for talks, suggesting that meaningful dialogue could not take place unless there was genuine willingness from both sides.

“The prime minister says, ‘Come and talk.’ It takes two hands to clap,” Fazlur Rehman remarked. “In my view, there aren’t two hands here that can come together to clap.”

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja welcomed Fazlur Rehman’s move towards greater opposition coordination, describing it as an extremely encouraging development.

“Maulana, the step you have taken is extremely encouraging. Today, we have to decide where we want to take this country,” Raja said.

He expressed hope that the emerging opposition unity and coordination would prove helpful in taking Pakistan in the right direction.

The meeting signals an effort to bring opposition parties onto a common parliamentary platform, with Fazlur Rehman calling for coordinated action inside Parliament and a stronger opposition narrative before the public.
