Heavy Rainfall Brings Relief from Heatwave Across KP and Twin Cities

Heavy rain, strong winds and thunderstorms swept across several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday, bringing an end to the recent heatwave and providing much-needed relief from soaring temperatures. However, flooding and waterlogging in various areas also caused disruptions to daily life.

The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad experienced steady rainfall accompanied by cool winds, significantly improving weather conditions after days of intense heat. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, rain is expected to continue in both cities until Thursday.

In Swat’s Mingora city, heavy downpours led to flash flooding in streams and drainage channels, inundating several roads and creating traffic problems. Residents reported difficulties moving through affected areas as water levels rose rapidly.

Haripur was also hit by severe weather, with flooding reported on multiple sections of GT Road and water accumulating in low-lying neighborhoods. The Met Office has forecast intermittent rainfall in Haripur and nearby areas over the next two days.

Abbottabad received heavy showers that resulted in waterlogging on major roads, while neighboring regions including Ghazi, Khanpur and Haripur experienced strong thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Meanwhile, Shangla district witnessed intermittent rainfall across both lower and upper regions, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures and more pleasant weather conditions.

Authorities have placed district administrations on alert to deal with any potential emergencies. The Deputy Commissioner of Islamabad has instructed assistant commissioners to closely monitor vulnerable and low-lying areas to ensure a swift response if required.

The Met Office has also advised citizens to remain cautious during periods of heavy rainfall and avoid unnecessary travel near streams, nullahs and flood-prone locations. Forecasts indicate that intermittent showers may continue in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until June 20.
