Speaking after the match, the 34-year-old said his journey with Brazil had come to an end.
“I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over,” Neymar said.
Neymar made his Brazil debut at the same stadium in a friendly against the United States on August 10, 2010. He came off the bench against Norway and scored Brazil’s only goal from the penalty spot late in the match.
Limited by a recurring calf injury, Neymar featured in just two of Brazil’s five World Cup matches.
Brazil captain Marquinhos called on supporters to back the team’s younger players as the national side begins a new chapter.
“We ask that people have patience with the new generation and support them from the beginning,” he said.
