Pakistan’s Polio Count Rises as Balochistan Reports 24th Case
Pakistan has reported another polio case in Jafarabad, Balochistan, raising the province’s total to 24 cases this year and intensifying concerns over virus transmission in the region. This latest case brings Pakistan’s nationwide count to 48 cases of Wild Poliovirus Type-1 (WPV1) in 2024, with significant clusters in Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and isolated cases in Punjab and Islamabad.
The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, recently confirmed the detection of the 48th WPV1 case, involving a male child from DI Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a district where polio remains endemic. Balochistan, with its concentration of cases, remains a focal point, accounting for nearly half of the country’s total cases.
