Pakistan to Introduce New Power Management System for Uninterrupted Electricity Supply

- Government announces a modern transformer-level load management system.
- Around 16 million electricity meters to be shifted to a digital platform in phases.
- Competitive electricity market and DISCO privatisation plans move forward.
- Line losses, circular debt and financial losses have declined, says Power Minister.
Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari has announced that the government is accelerating reforms in Pakistan’s power sector, with a series of initiatives aimed at ensuring a more efficient, transparent and uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers.
During a meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, the minister said significant progress is being made towards establishing a competitive electricity market. He also revealed that the first phase of the government’s privatisation programme has begun, with the process underway for the privatisation of three electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).

Leghari stated that the performance of power distribution companies has improved considerably over the past two years. He said line losses, financial deficits and circular debt have all declined, reflecting the positive impact of the government’s ongoing power sector reforms.
According to the minister, the government has successfully reduced circular debt by nearly Rs780 billion while continuing efforts to strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
He further said work is progressing rapidly on the digitisation of the national power grid, upgrading the transmission network, and deploying advanced metering infrastructure. As part of the initiative, around 16 million electricity meters across the country will be gradually converted to a digital system.
The power minister also announced the introduction of a modern transformer-level load management system under the APMS programme. He said the new system will improve electricity distribution and help provide consumers with more reliable and uninterrupted power.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi welcomed the government’s reform agenda, describing the ongoing efforts to modernise the power sector and improve electricity services as a positive step towards strengthening Pakistan’s energy system.
