Pakistan Railways Issues Rs 380 Million in Refunds for Train Delays
Pakistan Railways has refunded approximately Rs 380 million to passengers over the past three years due to significant delays in train departures from originating stations. This measure aims to address passenger grievances and improve service reliability, according to a recent statement by the Ministry of Railways.
In breakdown, the Ministry revealed that Rs 33 million were refunded in 2023, Rs 269 million in 2022, and Rs 78 million in 2021, reflecting a proactive approach to compensating passengers for extended delays. Pakistan Railways has implemented SMS alerts to notify passengers of train delays. Passengers are eligible for a full refund if a train’s departure from its starting station is delayed by more than six hours. In cases of emergencies, complimentary meals are also provided, and alternative arrangements such as rerouting or road transport are made when necessary.

A Ministry official emphasized that Pakistan Railways remains an economical choice for bulk cargo and long-haul transport, citing its fuel efficiency and lower overall costs compared to road transport for long distances. However, road transport offers advantages for shorter distances and smaller loads, particularly with its door-to-door delivery capability.
The official further highlighted global rail transport comparisons, pointing out that countries like the United States, China, and European nations benefit from dedicated freight corridors, bulk-haulage regulations, and advanced rail infrastructure, which enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. Pakistan’s rail infrastructure, however, is aging and requires substantial government investment for modernization to achieve similar efficiency levels.
