Pakistan Calls on India to Resume Indus Waters Treaty Implementation After Arbitration Court Ruling

Pakistan has urged India to promptly resume its commitments under the Indus Waters Treaty, following a recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration that reaffirmed the treaty’s validity and dismissed India’s unilateral suspension of the agreement.

In a statement issued on Monday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office welcomed the Court’s Supplemental Award, calling it a strong endorsement of Islamabad’s legal position. The ruling, delivered on Friday, confirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty remains binding and enforceable, and that no party has the authority to halt its application on its own.

The judgment came amid an ongoing dispute between the two countries over the Kishenganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects. The Court reiterated its jurisdiction over the matter and asserted its mandate to continue proceedings in a fair and timely manner. It also dismissed India’s claim made earlier this year to withdraw from the treaty, citing the lack of any clause in the agreement that permits unilateral suspension.

India had announced the suspension of the treaty on April 23, 2025, in the aftermath of a militant attack in Pahalgam. However, the Court’s rejection of that decision reinforces the legal integrity of the water-sharing agreement and emphasizes the necessity of resolving disputes within the framework of the treaty itself.
