MQM-P Calls For End To Petroleum Levy, Greater Tax Burden On Wealthy

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has called on the government to abolish the petroleum levy and shift the tax burden toward wealthy individuals and large capital holders as part of its proposals for the upcoming federal budget.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi on Wednesday after presenting the party’s shadow budget, senior MQM-P leader Dr Farooq Sattar said the petroleum levy should be removed immediately to provide relief to the public amid rising living costs.

He also urged the government to reduce taxes on the salaried middle class, arguing that ordinary citizens are already facing increasing financial pressure. In addition, he called for support measures for small farmers and agricultural workers to help strengthen the rural economy.

Farooq Sattar said MQM-P had prepared what it described as a people-friendly shadow budget focused on easing the burden on citizens and promoting economic activity. He maintained that the purchasing power of Pakistanis had declined considerably in recent years, making relief measures essential.

The MQM-P leader stressed that Pakistan’s economic sovereignty was closely linked to national stability and survival. He said the country’s economy was facing stagnation and argued that sustainable improvement could only be achieved through increased domestic investment and economic reforms.

He further stated that attracting local investment should be a priority for policymakers, saying economic growth would remain limited without stronger participation from domestic businesses and investors.

Commenting on foreign affairs and diplomacy, Farooq Sattar said Pakistan had gained international attention through the diplomatic efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
