Maryam Nawaz Launches Livestock Scheme for Widowed and Divorced Women in Southern Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a major rural empowerment initiative aimed at supporting widowed and divorced women across 12 districts in southern Punjab through the distribution of livestock. The program, valued at Rs2 billion, is expected to significantly improve household income and promote self-sufficiency among women in underserved rural communities.
In the first phase of the scheme, 4,870 buffaloes and cows will be distributed free of cost in key districts including Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Layyah, and Kot Addu. Additional beneficiaries will be selected from Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Vehari, Rahim Yar Khan, and Bahawalpur. The total target for the program is to reach 11,000 deserving women.

The initiative is specifically designed for widowed and divorced women up to the age of 55, allowing them to apply easily through a dedicated mobile application without needing to travel or seek intermediaries.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz highlighted the program as a step toward economic justice and inclusion, stating, “A daughter living in villages also has the right to economic development. Our resolve is to eliminate the poverty gap between villages and cities.”
She further emphasized her administration’s broader commitment to ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities for women across both rural and urban regions of Punjab.
