Lord’s Test: England Crash To 118-8 As New Zealand Dominate Opening Day

• Kyle Jamieson takes 4-50 as England struggle at Lord’s
• Harry Brook scores fighting half-century amid batting collapse
• New Zealand seize control of first Test in three-match series

England suffered a dramatic batting collapse on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on Thursday, finishing on 118-8 when bad light forced an early tea break.

New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jamieson led the visitors’ charge with an outstanding spell of 4-50 from 11.1 overs as England’s batting lineup crumbled in bowler-friendly conditions.

The only significant resistance came from Harry Brook, who scored a fighting 56. However, even his innings was aided by two dropped catches in an otherwise excellent fielding performance from New Zealand.

After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Tom Latham elected to bowl first, a decision that paid immediate dividends. England’s top order struggled throughout the day as the visitors’ pace attack made full use of the helpful conditions.

Debutant Emilio Gay, playing in place of the dropped Zak Crawley, made a bright start by hitting the first ball of his Test career for four. However, he was dismissed for eight when he edged Jamieson to Daryl Mitchell in the slips with England on 16.

Rain interrupted play and forced an early lunch, with England reaching 24-1 from 10 overs.

The collapse intensified after the break. Nathan Smith trapped Ben Duckett lbw for 19 before Jacob Bethell suffered a similar fate against Will O’Rourke, leaving England struggling at 33-3.

O’Rourke then claimed the prized wicket of Joe Root, who managed just one run before edging behind. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith also scored only one as he was bowled by a Jamieson delivery that sharply cut back and struck his off stump.

Brook attempted to counterattack after surviving an early chance when Devon Conway dropped him at backward point. He struck several attractive boundaries and was later joined by captain Ben Stokes, who was playing on his 35th birthday.

However, Stokes could not provide the rescue England needed. After hitting Jamieson for a boundary, he edged the fast bowler to Kane Williamson at second slip, who completed a superb one-handed diving catch. Stokes departed for 12, leaving England in serious trouble at 94-6.

Brook continued to battle and received another lifeline on 45 when Rachin Ravindra dropped a straightforward catch at deep midwicket. The England batter took advantage of the reprieve, reaching his half-century from just 64 deliveries with nine fours.

Jamieson soon struck again by dismissing Gus Atkinson lbw for four before ending Brook’s resistance. The right-hander eventually holed out to long leg shortly after reaching fifty, bringing an end to England’s best innings of the day.

With most of England’s specialist batters already back in the pavilion and only the tail remaining, New Zealand finished the session firmly in control of the contest.

The match is the first of a three-Test series and marks the historic 150th Test match to be played at Lord’s, one of cricket’s most iconic venues.
