The new Kiswa is produced at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, where specialists spend months crafting the covering from pure natural silk. The fabric is intricately embroidered with Quranic verses and Islamic motifs using gold- and silver-plated threads, combining traditional craftsmanship with advanced manufacturing techniques.
With the replacement date approaching, preparations inside the Grand Mosque have entered their final stage. Sections of the new Kiswa are carefully transported to designated locations, while experts conduct detailed inspections of the embroidered panels, decorative elements, and inscriptions to ensure everything is ready for installation.
On the scheduled replacement night, specialized technical and engineering teams begin the carefully coordinated operation. The process starts with the removal of the existing Kiswa’s embroidered and gilded components, followed by the gradual detachment of the old covering. The new Kiswa is then installed piece by piece across the Kaaba’s four sides according to a precise sequence to ensure perfect alignment.
The operation also includes the installation of the embroidered belt that encircles the Kaaba, the curtain covering its door, and other gilded decorative elements that are among the most recognizable features of the sacred covering.
The annual event highlights the expertise of Saudi specialists involved in the production, maintenance, and installation of the Kiswa. Over the years, the Kingdom has developed internationally recognized capabilities in this field while preserving an important part of Islamic heritage.
By dawn on the first day of Muharram, the Kaaba will be dressed in its new Kiswa, marking the beginning of a new Hijri year. The tradition remains a powerful symbol of reverence for the Holy Kaaba and reflects the continued care devoted to the Two Holy Mosques and the preservation of Islamic heritage.
