Video footage filmed by Palestinian journalist Adham Majed showed large crowds gathering at the scene as rescue efforts continued amid widespread destruction caused by the airstrike.
In a statement, Gaza’s Interior Ministry said al-Maqadmeh had served in the Palestinian police force since its establishment in 1994. Before becoming North Gaza’s police director, he had previously headed the police department in the Jabalia refugee camp.
The ministry further claimed that Israel has killed 53 police officers in direct attacks since a ceasefire was announced in October last year. It said seven officers were also killed in an Israeli strike on the Jabalia police station on July 14.
Gaza’s Interior Ministry described the repeated attacks on police personnel as a systematic effort to eliminate the territory’s law enforcement institutions and create chaos and disorder.
The Israeli military had not immediately commented on the reported strike or the death of al-Maqadmeh.
