International Day of Parliamentarism: PM Shehbaz, President Zardari Highlight Parliament’s Role in Democracy, Gender Inclusion

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message marking the International Day of Parliamentarism observed on June 30, underscored the pivotal role of Pakistan’s Parliament in safeguarding democratic values, promoting inclusive governance, and embracing technological innovation in legislative processes.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Parliament lies at the heart of Pakistan’s democratic framework, playing a critical role through its legislative authority, accountability mechanisms, and the active oversight of the executive by standing committees.

Highlighting the day’s global significance, the Prime Minister stated, “This day reaffirms our commitment to strengthening democratic institutions that are representative, inclusive, and responsive to citizens’ needs.” He noted that the celebration also reflects the importance of parliaments in ensuring the meaningful participation of women, youth, and marginalized voices.

Shehbaz Sharif praised the growing role of women in Pakistan’s legislative institutions, noting that the Constitution ensures female representation through reserved seats under Articles 51 and 59. “Our women parliamentarians have not only contributed meaningfully but also broken glass ceilings,” he said. Currently, eight women Senators and four women MNAs serve as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees—an achievement he described as a milestone for inclusive leadership.

The Prime Minister also pointed to Parliament’s proactive stance in passing progressive legislation, particularly in areas related to gender equality and social protection. He commended Parliament for embracing inclusivity in the governance process, citing recent federal budget consultations that included coalition partners and voices across the political spectrum.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s role in global legislative diplomacy, the Prime Minister said that the country’s parliamentary delegations continue to project national perspectives at international forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). He praised their effective advocacy, especially in the wake of regional tensions in South Asia.

In a nod to modernization, Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the importance of technology in promoting transparency and accessibility in Parliament, stating that digital tools are helping bring citizens closer to the legislative process.

“As we mark this important day, we must renew our commitment to strengthening our parliamentary institutions,” the Prime Minister concluded. “A vibrant Parliament ensures that the voices of our people are heard and reflected in laws that shape our national future.”

President Zardari Commends Parliament’s Role in Advancing Inclusive and Transparent Governance

President Asif Ali Zardari also commended the Parliament of Pakistan for its vital role in fostering inclusive, transparent, and participatory governance, as the nation marked the International Day of Parliamentarism on June 30.

In his message, President Zardari reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the core democratic values of freedom, inclusivity, tolerance, and socio-economic justice. “Today, we observe the International Day of Parliamentarism, reaffirming our commitment to upholding the principles of democracy,” he stated.

Highlighting the central role of Parliament in the country’s democratic framework, the President described it as the sovereign representative of the people and the guardian of constitutional values. “It plays an important role in shaping national policy, ensuring transparency and accountability, and defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens,” he said.

He emphasized that effective legislation and parliamentary oversight are crucial tools to enhance governance, improve public service delivery, and strengthen democratic institutions. “The legislature holds the responsibility of protecting democratic ideals and advancing national development,” he added.

Reaffirming Parliament’s mandate to legislate in the interest of the people, President Zardari said the institution will continue to uphold public welfare, safeguard individual rights and freedoms, and maintain robust oversight to ensure public accountability.

“Let us build a Pakistan where democracy flourishes, institutions are strong, and every citizen’s voice is heard and respected,” the President concluded, calling on all stakeholders to renew their commitment to democratic progress and institutional strength.
