Govt welcomes May 9 convictions, urges military trials for mastermind and accomplices

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Thursday praised the convictions of individuals involved in the May 9 arson attacks, emphasizing the need for military trials for the alleged mastermind and accomplices behind the incidents. Speaking to the media, he called the convictions a milestone in Pakistan’s pursuit of justice and national security.

The minister highlighted the military court rulings against 60 individuals charged with vandalism and attacks on sensitive installations, including Lahore’s Jinnah House, the PAF Airbase in Mianwali, and Qila Chakdara. “This is a significant step forward, as those responsible for attacking sensitive installations have been brought to justice,” Tarar stated.

He attributed the attacks to a “nefarious conspiracy masterminded by the PTI founder” and condemned the violence as an attempt to undermine Pakistan’s defense institutions. “This day marks a turning point for Pakistan. Justice has been served, and the rule of law has prevailed,” he said, adding that the convictions would deter future acts against national security.

Tarar stressed that the trials adhered to Pakistan’s constitutional framework and international treaties. He clarified that the prosecution invested significant time in collecting evidence and ensuring legal compliance throughout the proceedings. “The accused were given opportunities to engage legal counsel of their choice, access court records, and meet their families,” he said, noting that trials were not conducted in absentia.

The convicted individuals have the right to appeal through the military judicial hierarchy or by filing writ petitions in high courts. Tarar assured that due process was followed at every stage, ensuring fair trials.

The minister presented irrefutable evidence, including video footage and technical records, proving the involvement of the convicted individuals in the May 9 violence. He highlighted the vandalism at Jinnah House, the desecration of soldiers’ uniforms, and the burning of an aircraft at the Mianwali Airbase. The destroyed aircraft had historical significance, as it was once flown by national hero MM Alam.

“These acts were not just attacks on property but deliberate efforts to damage symbols of national pride and defense,” he remarked.

Tarar also criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for what he described as efforts to weaken the country through foreign lobbying and misinformation campaigns. He asserted that such attempts would fail, as Pakistan remains steadfast in its progress and commitment to justice.

He noted that even the PTI founder admitted the country’s development during a recent media interaction, which he said was an acknowledgment of the current government’s efforts.
