Government Reportedly Considers Ex-CJP Qazi Faez Isa for Chief Election Commissioner Role
With Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja set to retire in two-and-a-half months, the government is reportedly looking at former Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa as a leading candidate for the role, sparking early political tensions. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is actively seeking recommendations for the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) post, with Qazi Faez Isa topping a list of potential appointees that includes other retired judges and officials aligned with the administration.
The outgoing CEC’s tenure, ending in late January, has been marked by controversy, with critics attributing the February 2024 general elections issues to his leadership. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has been vocal about its disapproval of the current election commission, alleging manipulation aimed at bolstering rival political leaders.

If appointed, Qazi Faez Isa’s selection is expected to draw criticism from PTI, with insiders suggesting the party may mobilize protests. A senior PTI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, condemned the potential appointment, referring to Isa as a “disgraced, biased, and insignificant figure,” adding that any such move would be met with strong resistance.
The PTI official issued a warning, asserting that the party would hold accountable those responsible for what they termed an “ugly and reprehensible scheme.” Reflecting on the party’s stance, he remarked, “As long as we’re here, figures like Qazi Faez Isa will face public scrutiny and accountability.”
The proposed appointment of Isa, known for his judicial rapport with influential military leaders and a reputation for integrity, could mark a significant shift in Pakistan’s election oversight. However, with early signs of political opposition, the final decision may shape the discourse on electoral integrity and transparency in the coming months.
