Donald Trump named Time’s ‘Person of the Year’ for a second time

Time Magazine has named Donald Trump its “Person of the Year” for 2024, marking the second time the US President-elect has received this recognition. The accolade acknowledges his remarkable political comeback after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election.

Trump’s image graces the magazine’s cover, wearing his signature red tie and striking a commanding pose. The magazine credited Trump for “marshaling a comeback of historic proportions, driving a once-in-a-generation political realignment, reshaping the American presidency, and altering America’s role in the world.”

The announcement comes at the end of a tumultuous year for Trump, marked by his conviction on business fraud charges, surviving two assassination attempts, and securing a Republican majority in both chambers of Congress.

Despite legal troubles and controversies, including his role in the January 6 Capitol riot and a civil court ruling holding him liable for sexual abuse, Trump’s influence has remained undeniable. His campaign promises of mass expulsions of undocumented immigrants, imposing major tariffs, and rethinking U.S. support for Ukraine in its war against Russia have dominated headlines.

Time Magazine described Trump as both a “beneficiary and agent” of the global rise in populism and mistrust in traditional institutions, highlighting how his policies and rhetoric have reshaped the political landscape.

The annual award recognizes the year’s most influential figures, with past recipients including Taylor Swift, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Trump himself in 2016 after his unexpected victory over Hillary Clinton.

This year, other shortlisted candidates included Vice President Kamala Harris, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Russian economist Yulia Navalnaya, widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. However, the nomination of Netanyahu has sparked criticism amidst the ongoing devastation in Gaza, which has claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives.

Trump’s victory in the 2024 election and his preparations to return to the White House in January mark a stunning resurgence. He celebrated the Time Magazine honor at the New York Stock Exchange, ringing the opening bell alongside his wife Melania Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance, with his magazine cover prominently displayed.

During the event, Trump cautioned about challenges ahead, particularly addressing high grocery prices, stating, “It’s hard to bring things down once they’re up.”
