England Crush New Zealand By 115 Runs To Take 1-0 Series Lead

  • England defeated New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord’s.
  • Gus Atkinson claimed five wickets in the second innings to seal victory.
  • England now lead the three-match series 1-0 ahead of the second Test at The Oval.

England secured a dominant 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Chasing a target of 254 runs, New Zealand were bowled out for just 138 before lunch on the fourth day as England’s bowlers completed a comprehensive win in the historic 150th Test match played at Lord’s.

Fast bowler Gus Atkinson starred with the ball, claiming 5-30 in New Zealand’s second innings. It was the fourth time in only three Tests at Lord’s that Atkinson has taken a five-wicket haul in an innings, further strengthening his growing reputation at the iconic venue.

The match was dominated by bowlers from both sides due to overcast conditions and a pitch that offered uneven bounce throughout the contest. England’s Ollie Robinson also played a key role in the victory, producing a career-best Test performance of 5-39 in New Zealand’s first innings. Robinson was playing his first Test for England in more than two years.

After being bowled out for 140 in their first innings, England gained a crucial advantage by dismissing New Zealand for 113. Harry Brook top-scored for the hosts with 56 runs in the first innings, while New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson impressed with figures of 5-62.

England then strengthened their position in the second innings by posting 226 runs. Debutant Emilio Gay contributed an impressive 57, marking a memorable start to his Test career. For New Zealand, Nathan Smith was the standout bowler with figures of 6-70.

Set 254 to win, New Zealand never looked capable of mounting a successful chase as England’s pace attack kept up relentless pressure. Atkinson’s five-wicket haul ensured the visitors were dismissed for 138, handing England a comfortable victory.

The win gives England a positive start following their difficult Ashes campaign in Australia, where they suffered a 4-1 series defeat earlier this year.

The second Test of the series will be played at The Oval in London, beginning on June 17.
