Lionel Messi dismisses FIFA bias claims, says Argentina earned World Cup success through hard work

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has firmly rejected allegations of FIFA favouritism and match-fixing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting Argentina’s journey to the final has been built on dedication, consistency and performances on the pitch.

Speaking after Argentina’s dramatic 2-1 semi-final victory over England, Messi was asked about claims that FIFA had favoured the defending champions during the tournament.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner dismissed the accusations, saying Argentina have consistently been among the world’s top teams over the past four years and that their achievements have been earned, not handed to them.

“We have achieved everything through continuous hard work and strong performances. Nothing has been given to us, and nobody gives us anything for free,” Messi said.

Messi also dedicated Argentina’s semi-final triumph to football icon Diego Maradona, saying the late legend would have been proud to see the team reach another World Cup final.

“Diego would be very happy today. This day is special for him as well, and this victory is our gift to him,” he said.

Reflecting on Argentina’s famous 1986 World Cup victory over England, Messi praised Maradona’s unforgettable display and said the current squad is carrying forward the same passion, pride and fighting spirit that defined that historic team.

Argentina secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback win over England to book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they will face Spain in a blockbuster title clash.
