Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Advocate Amjad Hussain has been elected unopposed as the new Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the top provincial office.

With his election, Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan. He was elected from the GBA-1 constituency in the recent Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly elections and currently serves as the President of the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.

The development came just hours after PPP’s Imran Nadeem was elected Speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Malik Kifayat ur Rehman was elected Deputy Speaker, both unopposed. No rival candidates filed nomination papers for either position within the stipulated time.

Members of the Assembly and political leaders congratulated the newly elected office-bearers, expressing confidence that they would uphold democratic traditions and ensure the smooth, transparent, and impartial functioning of the House.

Earlier, the newly elected members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly took oath under the supervision of the outgoing Speaker.

In the June 7 Gilgit-Baltistan elections, the PPP emerged as the largest party by securing 13 seats. The PML-N won nine seats, while the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) secured six. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) and a PTI-backed independent candidate won one seat each.

Following the elections, the PML-N and IPP announced their support for the PPP in the elections for Chief Minister, Speaker, and Deputy Speaker. The PPP has also confirmed that it will form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan with the backing of both parties.
