PML-N lawmaker Arshad Malik suggests adding Nawaz Sharif’s image to proposed Rs 5,000 note

A statement by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Punjab Assembly member Arshad Malik regarding the proposed Rs5,000 currency note has sparked debate on social media.
During a recent assembly session, Malik suggested that if the State Bank of Pakistan introduces a new Rs5,000 note in the future, it should also feature the image of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif alongside the country’s founding leader, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Explaining his proposal, Malik said Nawaz Sharif’s political contributions and public service should be recognised at the national level. Video clips of his remarks have since circulated widely across social media platforms, triggering mixed reactions from users.
While some supporters backed the suggestion and praised Nawaz Sharif’s role in Pakistan’s political history, others argued that national currency should continue to feature only Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, whose portrait appears on all existing Pakistani banknotes.
There has been no official response from the State Bank of Pakistan or the federal government regarding Malik’s remarks. At present, no announcement has been made about the issuance of a new Rs 5,000 banknote.
