Pakistan rejects any illegal diversion of water share, Ishaq Dar reiterates

  • Pakistan says any illegal diversion or reduction of its water share will not be accepted.
  • Ishaq Dar warns that violating international river treaties threatens regional stability and global trust.
  • Pakistan vows to defend its water rights through diplomacy and international law while remaining committed to peace.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Tuesday reaffirmed that Pakistan will firmly defend its water rights under the Indus Waters Treaty, saying the country will not tolerate any unlawful attempt to divert, block or reduce its allocated share of water.

Addressing an international seminar on the Indus Waters Treaty in Islamabad, Dar said Pakistan remains committed to resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue, diplomacy and international legal frameworks. However, he made it clear that the country’s legitimate water rights are non-negotiable.

He recalled that the National Security Committee, during a meeting held after the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, unanimously decided that any attempt to stop, divert or reduce Pakistan’s water share would be viewed as an act of war. According to Dar, the decision reflected a united national position on protecting the country’s vital water interests.

The foreign minister stressed that water is the foundation of human life, economic growth and environmental sustainability, adding that rivers flow across borders and should never become instruments of political pressure.

Warning against violations of international agreements, Dar said ignoring treaty obligations weakens confidence between states, damages international cooperation and challenges the rules-based global order that helps preserve peace and security.

He further noted that South Asia already faces complex regional challenges, making respect for international law and existing agreements more important than ever. He said the Indus Waters Treaty was the result of years of negotiations aimed at ensuring the equitable and responsible use of shared water resources.
