Muharram Likely to Begin on June 27, Ashura Expected on July 6

The Islamic new year, 1447 Hijri, is expected to begin on Friday, June 27, with Youm-e-Ashura likely to fall on Sunday, July 6, according to astronomical forecasts shared by moon-sighting experts.

Astronomers noted that the new moon of Muharram will be born on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 25, at 3:31 PM (Pakistan Standard Time). However, due to the moon’s low altitude and brief visibility window, it is considered highly unlikely to be visible to the naked eye on that evening, particularly across South Asia and the Middle East.

While telescope-based sightings might be possible in select parts of the United States on June 25, global visibility is more probable on the evening of Wednesday, June 26. This increases the likelihood that the first day of Muharram will be observed on Friday, June 27, in Pakistan and many other countries.

Should the predicted timeline hold, the 10th of Muharram — Youm-e-Ashura, a day of deep religious significance observed by Muslims worldwide — would be marked on Sunday, July 6.

Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is scheduled to convene on the evening of June 26 to assess moon sighting reports and issue an official announcement regarding the start of the Islamic year. The committee’s decision will be based on both scientific data and physical sightings received from across the country.
