Lt Gen (R) Sajjad Ghani Resigns as WAPDA Chairman After Nearly Two-Year Tenure

Lieutenant General (retd) Sajjad Ghani has officially stepped down as Chairman of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), citing personal reasons for his resignation, government sources confirmed on Friday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has forwarded the resignation to the Cabinet Division for formal approval. In response to Ghani’s decision, the Prime Minister acknowledged his services and extended best wishes for his future.

Ghani had assumed the role in August 2022, becoming the 23rd chairman of the authority. His appointment came following the resignation of his predecessor, Lt Gen (retd) Muzammil Hussain, who stepped down shortly after Shehbaz Sharif became Prime Minister.

Ghani’s original appointment was made with the approval of the Federal Cabinet via circulation and was set for a five-year term. A notification from the Establishment Division had confirmed his appointment amid expectations that his military background would contribute to effective leadership at the helm of Pakistan’s key water and power institution.

The government is expected to announce a replacement soon, with WAPDA playing a pivotal role in overseeing critical infrastructure projects including dams, hydropower, and water resource development.
