Karachi Faces Worst Gas Shortage as Residents, Industries Struggle Amid Deepening Crisis

KARACHI: Karachi is facing one of its worst gas shortages in recent years, with domestic and commercial consumers struggling as gas supply remains critically low or completely suspended in several parts of the metropolis, causing widespread disruption to daily life and economic activity.

According to reports, the gas crisis has intensified following the shutdown of two gas fields, resulting in a major shortfall of around 45 million cubic feet per day. Sources said the closure of one gas field led to a reduction of 30 MMCFD, while the shutdown of another caused an additional loss of 15 MMCFD, further straining the already limited supply network.

The shortage has severely affected industrial zones across the city, where factories are facing acute gas shortages. Industrialists say disrupted gas supply has forced many units to either reduce production or suspend operations altogether, increasing financial losses and adding pressure to an economy already facing multiple challenges.

Domestic consumers are also bearing the brunt of the crisis, with many households complaining of negligible gas pressure or no supply during peak hours. Residents have expressed frustration that despite billions of rupees spent by the Sui Southern Gas Company on laying new gas pipelines and upgrading infrastructure, the situation on the ground has shown little improvement.

Affected residents say cooking meals has become increasingly difficult, particularly during morning and evening hours, forcing families to rely on alternative and costly energy sources. Many have questioned the effectiveness of infrastructure investments, arguing that gas pressure in several neighbourhoods remains insufficient to meet basic household needs.

Areas worst hit by the gas shortage include Malir, Saudabad, North Karachi, PIB Colony, Nazimabad, Shadman Town, Sir Syed Town, Kathore, Garden, Bura Pir, Akhtar Colony, Manzoor Colony, Chanesar Goth, Gadap City, Orangi and Liaquatabad. In some localities, residents report that gas supply remains unavailable for extended periods, worsening public anger and dissatisfaction.

Citizens have urged the authorities and gas utility officials to take immediate and effective measures to restore gas supply and address the persistent shortage. They have also called for greater transparency regarding field shutdowns and long-term planning to ensure Karachi’s growing population and industrial sector are not repeatedly subjected to such crises.

As the gas shortfall continues, daily life in Pakistan’s largest city remains under strain, with residents and businesses alike calling for urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration of living conditions and economic activity.
