Imran Khan threatens ‘civil disobedience’ over crackdown, demands judicial probe

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, currently incarcerated, has issued a stark warning to the federal government, threatening to launch a civil disobedience movement if his demands are not met. These demands include the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the crackdown on PTI supporters during the May 9 riots and the November 26 protest in Islamabad.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Imran Khan announced the formation of a five-member negotiation committee consisting of Omar Ayub Khan, Ali Amin Gandapur, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Salman Akram Raja, and Asad Qaiser. The committee will engage with the government on two key issues: the release of political prisoners facing trial and the judicial inquiry into the crackdown.

“If these two demands are not accepted, a civil disobedience movement will begin on December 14,” Khan declared, adding that the government would bear responsibility for any resulting consequences.
The PTI’s recent “do-or-die” protest in Islamabad, aimed at securing Khan’s release after more than a year in prison, ended abruptly after a midnight crackdown by the authorities. The party has claimed that 12 supporters were killed and 1,000 arrested during the operation, though the government denies using live ammunition and asserts that four law enforcement personnel, including three Rangers and a policeman, were martyred.
Imran Khan has also accused the authorities of detaining hundreds of PTI workers, who he claims remain missing. He called on the Supreme Court to intervene, urging the judiciary to fulfill its constitutional role.
“We approached the Supreme Court, Lahore High Court, and Islamabad High Court over severe human rights violations, but no action was taken,” he lamented.
In a related announcement, Khan revealed plans for a “grand gathering” in Peshawar on December 13 to honor those he referred to as martyrs of the Islamabad protest. He urged supporters to join the event to pay tribute to those who, according to him, sacrificed their lives for the party’s cause.
