Courts Grant Bail and Acquittals to Senior PTI Leaders in Arson and Protest Cases

Legal proceedings brought relief to several senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders on Saturday, as courts in Lahore and Islamabad issued favorable rulings in high-profile cases linked to protests and violence.

In Lahore, the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) approved bail for PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the May 9 Shadman arson case. The decision was announced by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gill during a session held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. Qureshi’s legal team, comprising Rana Muddasir Umar and Barrister Taimoor Malik, presented comprehensive arguments in support of the bail petition, which had been filed several months earlier.

Qureshi’s bail comes shortly after a similar decision was granted in favor of former Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema, who is also accused in the same case.

Meanwhile, in Islamabad, Judicial Magistrate Shehzad Khan of the District and Sessions Court acquitted multiple senior PTI figures in connection with protest demonstrations held on April 26, 2024. The protests, organized to challenge alleged rigging in the general elections, led to multiple legal complaints against the party’s leadership.

Those acquitted include PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, along with prominent party leaders Omar Ayub, Ali Bukhari, Shoaib Shaheen, Amir Dogar, Malik Rafiq, and Amir Mughal. The protest in question had originated from Shoaib Shaheen’s office and proceeded toward the Karachi Company area.
