Ravindra Jadeja Surpasses Zaheer Khan to Become India’s Fifth-Highest Wicket-Taker in International Cricket

Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja added another milestone to his illustrious career by overtaking Zaheer Khan to become the fifth-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket. The achievement came during the third Test match against England at Lord’s, where Jadeja dismissed Ollie Pope for 44 with a delivery that spun away from a good length, resulting in a sharp catch by Dhruv Jurel. This dismissal marked Jadeja’s 611th wicket in international cricket.

With this latest feat, Jadeja has now taken 611 wickets in 361 international matches, moving past former pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who finished his career with 610 wickets from 309 appearances. Jadeja’s best bowling figures stand at 7 for 42, and he has been especially effective in the longest format of the game. In 83 Test matches, he has claimed 326 wickets, including 15 five-wicket hauls and three ten-wicket match performances.

Anil Kumble remains India’s leading wicket-taker in international cricket with 953 scalps, followed by Kapil Dev, Harbhajan Singh, and R Ashwin. While Zaheer was one of India’s premier fast bowlers with memorable performances, some of his wickets—13 in total—came while playing for the Asia XI. Jadeja’s tally, however, is solely for India.

Jadeja’s latest accomplishment came on a day when England was fighting back in the third Test after a shaky start. After winning the toss and opting to bat, England reached 153 for 2 at Tea, thanks to a resilient partnership between Joe Root and Ollie Pope. The pair added 109 runs for the third wicket after early blows had put the hosts under pressure.

Root reached his fifty off 102 balls and was unbeaten on 54 at the break, while Pope displayed patience with a gritty 44 not out. Their stand brought stability to England’s innings after they resumed at 83 for 2 following Lunch.

The ongoing five-match Test series is currently levelled at 1-1, making the Lord’s Test a crucial encounter for both teams.
