Punjab Budget 2026 Prioritises AI, Broadband And Digital Development

The Punjab government has unveiled its proposed development budget for 2026, placing a strong emphasis on information technology, artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure as part of its broader strategy to modernize governance and promote economic growth.

According to the budget proposals presented on Thursday, billions of rupees have been earmarked for technology-driven initiatives, including broadband expansion, AI-based monitoring systems and digital development programs.
The proposed Annual Development Programme includes new schemes worth more than Rs4.22 billion, reflecting the government’s focus on innovation, environmental management and youth development.
Among the major allocations, Rs10 billion has been proposed for the Chief Minister’s Priority Program, while another Rs10 billion has been set aside for smog eradication initiatives aimed at tackling one of Punjab’s most pressing environmental challenges.
A significant allocation of Rs88 billion has been proposed for Phase II of the Chief Minister’s Internship Program, which is expected to provide training and employment opportunities for thousands of young people across the province.
The government has also allocated Rs72.5 billion to expand broadband connectivity in urban areas, a move aimed at improving internet access, supporting digital businesses and enhancing online education and public services.
One of the key highlights of the proposed budget is the establishment of a modern artificial intelligence platform along with government cloud infrastructure. The system is expected to be used for monitoring industrial pollution and strengthening environmental oversight across Punjab.
In addition to AI and broadband projects, the development plan includes funding for socio-economic data collection initiatives, freelancing and bootcamp programs designed to enhance digital skills, the One Map Punjab project and efforts linked to achieving sustainable development goals.
The proposed allocations underscore the Punjab government’s growing focus on technology-led governance and digital transformation, with policymakers aiming to improve public services, create employment opportunities and support long-term economic development through innovation.
