PTI negotiation committee to brief Imran Khan on key talks with government

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation team is set to meet the party’s imprisoned founder, Imran Khan, at Adiala Jail today to brief him on the progress of initial talks with the government and seek his input on future strategies. The meeting, scheduled for 2 PM, comes as a key step in the much-anticipated negotiation process between the government and PTI, which began earlier this week in Islamabad.

The government granted permission for this crucial consultation following PTI’s request. Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a member of the government’s negotiation panel, confirmed on Tuesday that the team was authorized to meet Khan. Sources revealed that during the meeting, PTI representatives would update Khan on the outcomes of the first round of discussions held on Monday and deliberate on the party’s next steps.

The inaugural session of negotiations saw representation from both sides, aiming to address the months-long political deadlock in Pakistan. The government delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Naveed Qamar, and MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar. Meanwhile, PTI was represented by former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

The second round of negotiations is scheduled for January 2, during which PTI is expected to present its demands in writing. The party’s key priorities include the release of political detainees, including Imran Khan, and the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 incident.

The talks are unfolding amid heightened political tensions, with the jailed former prime minister having urged supporters last month to initiate a civil disobedience movement. He suggested withholding remittances as a form of protest to press for the party’s demands.

Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah highlighted the importance of consensus. He emphasized that both parties need to find common ground while acknowledging that neither side would completely agree with the other’s demands. “Talks can lead to a situation convenient for both sides,” Sanaullah stated, adding that the negotiation timeline depends on PTI’s formal presentation of its demands.
