Mitchell Santner Claims Mumbai Indians Paid Only Half Of IPL Contract Fee

New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner has revealed that he received only half of his agreed Indian Premier League (IPL) contract payment from Mumbai Indians after a shoulder injury cut short his participation in the tournament.

Speaking in a recent interview, Santner said he was disappointed by the decision, especially because the injury occurred while representing the franchise during the competition.

According to Santner, his contract with Mumbai Indians was worth INR20 million, but he was paid only 50 percent of the agreed amount after being ruled out of the tournament due to injury.

The left-arm spinner explained that his IPL campaign was disrupted shortly after he returned to India. He said he missed his first match of the season following the birth of his second child and later returned to play against Delhi, where he suffered a shoulder injury.

Santner said he managed to return to action about a week later but injured the same shoulder again, forcing him to leave the tournament and return home for rehabilitation.

Reflecting on the setback, the New Zealand cricketer said the shoulder was injured twice within a span of two weeks and he felt he was putting excessive strain on his body. He initially expected the recovery process to take around eight weeks.

However, Santner recovered much faster than anticipated and regained full fitness within four weeks. He subsequently rejoined the New Zealand national squad a week before the first Test against England.

The all-rounder noted that his quicker-than-expected return to cricket sparked discussion in the media regarding his injury and recovery timeline.

Santner featured in five matches for Mumbai Indians before being officially ruled out of the IPL on April 27. Following his exit, the franchise signed South African spinner Keshav Maharaj as his replacement.

Under IPL regulations, players who sustain injuries during the tournament are generally compensated according to the terms of their contracts. However, Santner alleged that he did not receive the full contracted amount despite suffering the injury while participating in the competition.

Indian media reports said Mumbai Indians have not yet issued an official response to Santner’s claims regarding the payment dispute.
